About the event
Join Brianna Itter in learning with your child how to better manage big and overwhelming emotions and interactions with others through the use of practical coping skills and effective regulation strategies. Through this 8-week course, you and your child will go through the various elements of DBT and learn how to strategically utilize the skills taught in each lesson.
Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) is a type of therapy that can be effective for children's groups who struggle with emotional regulation and interpersonal relationships. In a DBT group setting, children learn skills to manage their emotions, tolerate distress, and improve communication with others. The therapist will teach the children four modules of skills: mindfulness, emotion regulation, distress tolerance, and interpersonal effectiveness.
Mindfulness skills help children become aware of their emotions and thoughts without judgment, which can improve their ability to regulate their emotions. Emotion regulation skills help children learn to identify and manage their emotions in a healthy way. Distress tolerance skills help children learn to cope with distressing situations without resorting to harmful behaviors. Finally, interpersonal effectiveness skills teach children how to communicate effectively with others and establish healthy relationships.
The therapist will often use role-playing exercises and interactive activities to help children learn and practice these skills. Through the process of this therapy group, children and their parents can improve their emotional wellbeing, decrease maladaptive behaviors, and increase overall quality of life.
